Your Pet's Grooming Schedule - Are you on Track?

With our lives being so busy nowadays it's easy to accidentally overlook our pet's grooming routine, especially as they aren't able to remind us themselves. Below are the most commonly asked questions we receive to help you plan your schedule with your pet's grooming needs in mind.

How often should I brush my pet?

All pets will benefit from a regular brushing schedule regardless of coat type, but for those with a more high-maintenance coat daily brushing is essential. For those with an easier coat to maintain, every other day or even once a week should be sufficient.

Answer: Daily/weekly

How often should I bathe my pet?

Despite popular belief too regular bathing can actually be detrimental to a pet's coat and skin, especially if it isn't properly prepped, dried and brushed afterwards. In a sticky or smelly situation an owner may have little choice but to bathe their pet, but generally speaking once a month is sufficient for (most) dogs, while cats can go much longer between baths.

It's also important to note that all pets have a different skin PH level to humans, so human shampoo should never be used as an alternative to pet-safe shampoo.

Answer: Monthly or longer

How often should I get my pet's hair cut?

Depending on the species, breed, coat type and style preference, most pets will benefit from a haircut every 6 - 10 weeks. Your pet groomer will be able to recommend a suitable schedule based on you and your pet's individual needs.

Answer: Every 6 - 10 weeks

How often should I treat my pet for parasites?

Monthly treatment for parasites is essential to keep your pet in the utmost health, to maintain good skin and coat condition and also prevent infestations in the home.

We recommend using a good quality, vet-prescribed treatment rather than the shampoos and tablets available in pet stores.

Answer: Monthly

How often should I brush my pet's teeth?

Ideally all pets should be introduced to dental care from an early age, but even older pets with no experience will benefit once a routine has been set up.

Biscuit diets, chew treats and supplements in the water bowl will all do their part to keep teeth and gums healthy, but daily brushing, or at a minimum every other day is best to keep your pet's mouth at its healthiest.

Answer: Daily/every other day

How often should I trim my pet's nails?

As each pet's nails will grow at a unique rate (depending on species, age, health, level of exercise etc.,) it's important to check your pet's nails weekly. This way you can be sure to spot a problem before it develops. Generally, most cats and dogs will need their nails trimming every 4 - 8 weeks.

Some signs your pet may need its nails trimmed are: a clicking/tapping sound when they walk, nails bending or touching the floor when standing, claws becoming stuck in carpet or furniture and general discomfort around the feet.

Answer: Every 4 - 8 weeks
